Project to Modernise Surgical Specialities at University Hospital Hradec Králové Launched with Construction of Logistics Centre and Central Control Room

The Modernisation of Surgical Specialities project at the University Hospital Hradec Králové officially commenced today with a ceremonial groundbreaking attended by distinguished guests. The project will begin with the construction of a new logistics centre and a central control room. The new building, located adjacent to the existing Pavilon akademika Bedrny, will be constructed by a consortium of building companies in the coming months. The entire project, valued at CZK 4.3 billion and including a partial reconstruction of the Bedrna Pavilion, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028 and will support the further development of all surgical disciplines.

“The Modernisation of Surgical Specialities project at the University Hospital Hradec Králové is among seven key strategic investments of the Ministry of Health, which will receive more than CZK 14 billion from the state budget. This project will consolidate all surgical specialities into a single building and significantly improve facilities for both staff and patients across our broad catchment area,” said the Czech Minister of Health, Prof. MUDr. Vlastimil Válek, CSc., MBA, EBIR, at the project launch.

According to MUDr. Aleš Herman, Ph.D., Director of the University Hospital Hradec Králové, upon completion the Orthopaedic Clinic, Neurosurgery Clinic, and the Clinic of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery will relocate to the new Surgical Pavilion of Academician Bedrna, alongside the creation of additional surgical workplaces. “The new pavilion will offer a total of 22 operating theatres, including a hybrid operating theatre, the hospital’s third robotic surgical system, and new facilities for expanding day‑surgery services,” said Director Herman. A newly established outpatient procedure unit will feature three procedure rooms, four performance stations, and a 14‑bed day‑care ward.

The modernisation project was developed by Ing. Petr Vašina, MBA, MSc., and his team from the architectural studio SIEBERT + TALAŠ spol. s r.o. In total, the Bedrna Surgical Pavilion will provide almost 16,000 square metres of built‑up area and more than 300,000 cubic metres of enclosed space. Upon completion, the pavilion will contain 2,481 rooms, 1,783 kilometres of electrical cabling, and over 130,000 square metres of interior wall finishes.

The construction works are being carried out by a consortium of three building companies. “We took over the construction site on 10 March and work on the logistics centre and central control room is already underway. Earthworks for the Bedrna Pavilion extension have also begun and will be followed by pile foundation works. The complexity of the project lies in its division into seven sequential stages. Construction will take place under full hospital operation, placing significant demands on transport, logistics—ensuring access to all hospital buildings remains intact—and on the coordination of medical technologies. We have a total of 195 weeks to complete the project and will hand over the finished buildings to the University Hospital Hradec Králové on 4 December 2028,” said Ing. Zdeněk Pokorný, Chairman of the Board of VCES a.s.

Setting up the construction site requires the closure of the current car park between the pavilion and the goods entrance, where approximately 160 parking spaces are located.
“The same number of parking spaces will be provided within the construction site area on the paved surface near the goods entrance. Once the logistics centre is completed, the existing warehouses will be demolished, and by summer 2026 nearly 400 new parking spaces will be created,” explained Director Herman. A further 100+ parking spaces will be available in summer 2027 in front of the new extension to the Bedrna Pavilion. Throughout the reconstruction, patient care will be provided in the new extension.

The project of the new extension and partial reconstruction of the Bedrna Pavilion is financed through the government’s Strategic Investments Programme for state‑managed organisations of the Ministry of Health, along with CZK 1.445 billion from the budget of the University Hospital Hradec Králové.
